Dumerso is a private washing station just north of Yirga Chefe in Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone, a region long regarded as the benchmark for complex and floral arabica coffee. The mill is owned by Hirut Berhanu, who acquired the site in 2010 after years of experience in Ethiopia’s coffee sector, including time at the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange. Though the station was originally built in 1998, it had never fully operated until Hirut transformed it and officially launched in 2013. Today Dumerso employs over 400 workers during harvest, 95% of them women, and is supported by site manager and quality specialist Abenet Alemu, who grew up in Yirgacheffe and bridges local knowledge with quality control.
In 2014 Hirut and her sister Mahder created Dumerso Industrial Trading PLC to mill, roast, and export directly to international markets. Farmers deliver ripe cherries daily, which are depulped, pre-washed, and fermented underwater for 36–48 hours, then dried on raised beds for 9–11 days to a final moisture of 9.5–11.5%.
With processing and export running smoothly, Dumerso now invests in farmer and community benefits. The station has achieved organic and Rainforest Alliance certification, launched a project to convert parchment into pressed firewood, and financed power equipment for local residents. Hirut and Mahder also support staff with healthcare, loans, and housing for seasonal workers.
How to Brew Ethiopia Dumerso
